Helen-Arts-Gallery is privileged to present some works by the great sculptor Miguel Berrocal on its internet site.
We thank the Fundación Escultor Berrocal that has generously let us publish the editions of great artistic interest, a demonstration and confirmation of the eclecticism of their artist.
It is presumptuous to try to write the biography of Miguel Berrocal in this brief space: innumerable publications have done so with great competence; catalogues curated by eminent art historians have praised his research; his essential bibliography occupies a dozen pages; hundreds of exhibitions have honored his creations throughout the world; his list of collectors is impressive.
In a ponderous, exhaustive catalogue edited in 1989, curated by Jean-Louis Ferrier, you can admire the watercolors in which Berrocal notes his ideas, considerations, in his elegant handwriting.
It’s almost a private diary that guides the comprehension of his tireless research on form: “Calligraphy is also a pretext to study and penetrate the semantic, environmental meaning of form. From the sign to the volume to the form is only one step: it is the third dimension.”
The conclusive analysis by Jean Louis Ferrier in the fore mentioned catalogue “BERROCAL”*, closes this short introduction before viewing works in the Gallery.
"For the first time in history, our century has seen the break between two cultures, artistic or literary and scientific, that once moved together...From that moment artists and researchers are, except for rare exceptions, tone deaf to each other…Berrocal, on the contrary, is one of the rare creators to explore these two ways that are separate today, like the men of the Renaissance. That, I think, is enough to define his importance and his originality.“
